Social Justice at YLC

Social Justice at YLC

Social Justice is a workshop that is presented by our Builders, where Leaders learn about different topics regarding Social Justice daily. The goal of these workshops is to educate us, the Leaders about how our United States society works, how to respect others and how to have a win/win situation with people from different backgrounds.

Today, June 28th, 2013, we had a guest speaker, Stephanie Johnson, on the topic of –isms, such as, racism, sexism, heterosexism, audism, ableism, and so on. The guest speaker empowered us on how to conquer and put –isms to a stop. She explained how society labels an individual based on his/her race, class, ability, education, partner preference, religion, and sex. Just because the individual is different, it doesn’t mean that they should be treated any different from someone that is well known.

Stephanie Johnson gave a presentation about “-ims” to the leaders.

We watched Stephanie Johnson showing us one of the social justice activities.

Stephanie used the water as a symbol of oppression during her social justice workshop.
