For the past few days, the weather has been a bit gloomy
along side the pouring rain here and there. However, the glum weather has not
affected our spirit throughout the day! Teams L, E, A and D may not have their
team names yet, but they are surely persistent! From Leadership Development
Program to Fireside Chat, our leaders are more than motivated to learn what the
YLC program has to offer, especially how to grow as better leaders.
During one of our Fireside Chat, we learned more about deaf
dogs from our Assistant Chef, Mickie Brunton, who owns a deaf pitbull named
Rimel. Mickie, a Kentucky native, moved to Texas few years ago to volunteer as
a veterinarian. While volunteering, she found out that there was a
two-month-old deaf dog that needed a home. Mickie, an animal lover, gave her
care to Rimel by teaching sign language and to look for a new home. While on
search for finding Rimel a new family, the veterinarians suggested on putting
Rimel to sleep. Of course, Mickie opposed and decided to take in Rimel. The leaders and the builders were so inspired
on learning more about having deaf dogs and are more than thrilled to have
Rimel around the campgrounds alongside Yolo (Jon Kessel’s dog, both service
dogs).
Evening Program has also been a huge hit here at YLC. So far
the leaders have been playing kickball (with a twist), Tortoise and the Hare,
and Treasure Hunt. The Builders are
impressed with their teamwork, communication skills, and overall performance.
